Good-Hair Girl Guidelines

Chances are that at some point in you life you've wondered why your sister, neighbor, coworker, or best friend has perfect hair and you.. well it isn't perfect. You might even share a hair-stylist! That's why I'm here to map out a schedule for cutting, coloring, moisturizing, and even washing your hair - to achieve your hairs full potential. Healthy hair is where all great hairstyles start and finding a schedule to fit your hair type is the most important part!

{WASHING}

Fine Hair: Every other day to every two days is perfect! You don't want your hair to get too greasy and weigh it down, but you still want as many natural oils as possible to nourish your hair. Grab some Paul Mitchell Dry Wash for the in-between wash days! It helps with absorbing oil and adds natural-looking volume to the hair.

Medium to Course Hair: Every three days to once a week. This is sometimes a hard transition for those of you that think you must wash your hair everyday, but thicker hair takes longer to absorb those nourishing, natural oils. Thicker hair takes longer to appear greasy, so take advantage! Once again, Paul Mitchell Dry Wash between washes is a life-saver. Its fresh scent helps the transition from washing everyday, to getting on a healthy hair washing cycle.

Chemically Treated Hair: Wash according to your texture, but don't skip the overnight conditioning once a week. I suggest using Awapuhi Keratin Intensive Treatment. After washing, apply generously and put a shower cap on to cover it. The shower cap will keep it from getting on your pillow and help hold in heat - which penetrates the conditioning treatment deep into your cuticle. Awapuhi K.I.T. replenishes the hair, without weighing it down.

Two quarter-size amounts of shampoo gives a great lather, without wasting product. If you find that your shampoo isn't lathering well, try putting your head back under the water for just a split second. This should help emulsify the shampoo. Did you know that most people don't rinse their conditioner out for long enough? That will result in an all around upsetting style, by weighing down the volume that most people desire.

{CUTTING}

Shoulder length and shorter: Every 4-6 weeks

Below shoulders: Every 8 weeks

Long hair: I've noticed that women that are trying to grow out their hair think that by not trimming it, they are reserving the length. The issue with that is that it does more harm than good. Split ends will accumulate and travel further up your hair shaft, leaving behind dryness and damage. Trimming it once every 8 weeks prevents more damage than health, and healthy hair is happy (and beautiful) hair!

Styling Tips: Using hot tools daily takes a huge toll on your hair! Try to only use them a few times a week - with a thermal protectant. If you follow your recommended washing schedule, it saves you a lot of exposure to high heat on your hair. My all-time favorite protectant is Paul Mitchell Hot Off the Press. It has a very light hairspray on top of the thermal protecting agents that helps the style to last longer.

{COLOR}

All-over color: Every 4 weeks
Blonde: Every 6 weeks
Balayage or Ombre: Time to tone the blonde again after 4-6 weeks

{HAIR REPAIR}

Be on the lookout for the product that is changing the way that hair is repaired. I will be doing a whole blog post about this one product - very soon.
